Don and Lucero, who are here for training each worked with Jim, our Belgian helper yesterday. Jim is recovering from a bout of Hoary Alyssum exposure this summer. There was a while when Jim could not walk comfortably much less help another horse learn his job.

Don, the youngster is still a bit unsure of his ability to pull steadily and slowly. He works well until there is a slight incline that increases his load and then he wants to rush and stop. Jim does his job and just continues to walk along. Don will get the idea that slow but sure is easier. He walks quietly and works both sides of the tongue about the same. He does seem to feel a bit more comfortable working with Val on either side , but will find Jim to be a bit more unmovable in his rushing.

Don is catching on

Lucero is doing well this week. Starting each workout at a walk and then only bouncing when I add some mental pressure. He is finding that if he does not rush or bounce then the turning is quite smooth. he likes that. He is quite confident in his pulling, so today he helped Jim pull a bale of hay out to the pasture of the working herd. The bale is a 2′X 3′ X 8′ bale and weighs about 600 pounds. This requires passing through all my horses who are pushing in close to get an early mouthful of hay. he did it very well. We have to stop while the gate gets closed and while we cut twine string. Each of these times the herd gets to approach and hassle the team. He did very well.
